We plan to offer 15 California libraries the opportunity to connect more closely with veterans and their families, while also helping veterans and their families connect to the community and resources. Expand the reach of your Veterans Resource Center with funding for books and community programs through California Center for the Book! Collaborate with a community partner and fellow librarians to design programs that promote the Veterans Resource Center and reach veterans and their families in your community. Libraries who currently provide or plan to provide Veterans Resource Centers at their location will be given first preference in the application process. If so, please list here. Limit your response to 1 sentence. Veterans Service Office, California Veterans Home – Fresno, Friends of the Library, Fresno Swing Dance Planned Programs Page 2 of 5 Do you have 2 potential programs in mind? If so, please summarize here. Limit your response to 1 paragraph. One program will be an art workshop, during which veterans will create pieces of art. This artwork along with other submissions from the veteran community will be displayed at a local library branch for one month as part of Fresno’s monthly Art Hop event and will include a reception for the artists. Art Hop is a city wide event with multiple locations in Fresno serving as art galleries. The second program will be an evening of music and swing dancing with a live band. Both programs will draw in veterans as well as the general public. What made you apply for this program? How did you determine that this program will meet a community need? How do you plan to work with your community partner? Please limit your response to 1 paragraph. Fresno County Public Library (FCPL) staff facilitated three community conversations with veterans and service providers using the Harwood method. The participants at these conversations made it clear that veterans need a central hub of current and accurate information. With two Veterans Resource Centers, FCPL is uniquely equipped to fill that need. The two programs created through this grant will enhance the Resource Center services by providing additional channels for veterans to connect with the library and the information that is available to them. I plan to work with community partners to create and promote the programs so that they are appealing and helpful to veterans.
